A Home Office to Call Home

Budget-minded and high-end options for those whose commute is a trip down the hall.

Whatever your reason for setting up a home office, this is an ideal time to do so. Price wars in the PC industry and the shuttering of new-economy companies have made bargain equipment and furniture easy to come by. Bear in mind, however, that you will be your own IT department, so choose equipment that's robust and reliable enough to keep headaches to a minimum. Value, too, is important, since you're probably spending your own money on equipment (for information on tax deductions, check out the IRS's site). We've created two home office showcases -- one with practicality and price firmly in mind, the other assembled with no restrictions except the imagination -- so whatever your bracket, one of them should fit the bill.

When Money's No Object

Desk: Biomorph Personal Desk. Adjustable desk and monitor platforms allow users to find the most ergonomically correct and comfortable positions. $1,295; 212-809-4323; www.biodesk.com.

Computer (Mac): Apple's (AAPL) 867-MHz Power Mac G4. This state-of-the-art expandable powerhouse packs the fastest G4 processor in the line, 128MB SDRAM, a 60GB hard drive, and a Superdrive, which reads and writes both CD and DVD discs. $2,499.

Computer (PC): Dell Dimension 8200. We've already raved about Dell's service and support. This powerful machine features a 2-GHz Pentium 4 processor, 128MB RDRAM, and up to 100GB hard drive. $1,729 and up.

Monitor (Mac): Apple Cinema Display. Measuring 22 inches diagonally, with a resolution of 1,600 by 1,024 pixels, this epic screen combines panoramic views with professional-level performance. Its digital graphic interface with G4 Macs eliminates distortion. It provides the screen workspace of two normal monitors. $2,499.

Monitor (PC): Dell 1702FD 17-inch Flat Panel Display. Flat-panel displays take up less desk space and look cool, but they also reduce eyestrain, save energy, emit no harmful radiation, and maintain brightness better and longer than tube displays. This beauty provides about as much screen real estate as a 19-inch CRT. $800.

Printer: HP OfficeJet PSC 950. Since space is at a premium in most home offices, choose the PSC 950, which is a printer, copy machine, fax, and flatbed scanner in one. For Windows and Mac; $399; 800-752-0900; www.hp.com.

Chair: Steelcase Leap Coach Edition. This clever chair adjusts to match the contours and movements of your spine, with separate upper- and lower-back controls. $2,400; 800-333-9939; www.steelcase.com.

Speakers: Sonigistix Monsoon MM-2000 Flat Panel Surround System. This compact five-piece speaker system envelops the listener in a three-dimensional sound field. For Windows and Mac; $299; 877-722-8346; www.sonigistix.com.

Keyboard: Microsoft Office Keyboard. This keyboard's array of buttons makes launching and working with Office XP applications and the Internet more convenient. Limited Mac compatibility; $65; 800-426-9400; www.microsoft.com.

Mouse: Microsoft IntelliMouse Optical. Billed as the most accurate and responsive optical mouse on the market, it has five buttons plus a scroll wheel for navigating through applications and websites. Works equally well for both righties and lefties. For Windows and Mac; $60.

Phone: Panasonic 2.4-GHz GigaRange Extreme SST KX-TG2583. A handsome system that boasts enhanced security, a digital answering machine, and dual call waiting/caller ID. One caveat: There may be interference if you use a 2.4-GHz wireless home-networking system. $240.

Power Supply: American Power Conversion Back-UPS Pro 500 USB. This unit combines surge suppression and battery backup along with a USB connector that allows automatic "soft" shutdowns. $149.

Shredder: Royal AG15X Crosscut. This voracious shredder's sharp teeth can chew 15 pages at a time. It has important safety features and -- unlike most low-cost shredders -- its motor and gears are designed for rugged use. $150.

Total: Mac: $10,055; PC: $7,586
